Invasion of Poland
It was important because it marked the beggining of World War II. On this date Germany invaded Poland. To Hitler, the conquest of Poland would bring Lebensraum, or “living space,” for the German people. -
Germany attacks France
This was called the Battle of France. This took place in the Low countries, France. Germany wanted to invaded Russia but France would honour its aliance with Russia so they decided to strike first so they would keep the initiative.It was important because Germany used its blitzkrieg tactics during the Battle of France to great success. This tactic saw German forces move at an incredible pace and overwhelm the Allied forces wherever they met. -
Battle of Britain
This battle consisted on the effort of Luftwaffe on obtaining air superiority over the Royal Air Force (RAF). On July,10th Luftwaffe made their first bomber attack on British ships in the Channel. Poland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, France, the United States and South Africa were involved in this battle. It´s so important because it was the first battle completely fought by air forces and it marked the first defeat of Hitler´s miliary forces. -
Hitler sends the Afrika Korps to North Africa
Adolf Hitler established the Afrika Korps for the explicit purpose of helping his Italian Axis partner maintain territorial gains in North Africa.They wanted Africa for strategic, political, and psychological reasons. This was important because later, Italy was defeated and the afrika korps let them to reinforce in order to prevent a complete Axis defeat. -
Operation Barbarossa begins
It was the code name used by Axis power in the insavion of Soviet Union.Barbarossa was the crucial turning point in World War II, for its failure forced Nazi Germany to fight a two-front war against a coalition with superior resources. The Germans had serious deficiencies. -
Attack on Pearl Harbour
This attack was a surprise by Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (located in US, neutral country in that moment) against the Naval Base on Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. This attack was so important because American people pulled thogether in unity and that helped US becoming a world power. -
US and British troops land on the beaches of Algeria and Morocco
This event was called Operation Torch. It was an Allied invasion of French North Africa and was intended to draw Axis forces away from the Eastern Front, thus relieving pressure on the hard-pressed Soviet Union. It was so important because they wanted the Suez Canal for oil production because it had become a critical strategic commodity due to the increased mechanization of modern armies. -
Allied troops land on the beaches of salerno
Troops and vehicles being landed during the invasion of mainland Italy at Salerno. Then it began the invasion of Italy by Allied powers.
It was named the operation Avalache -
D-Day
It was called Operation Overlord. American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. This event is so important because was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. -
Paris was liberated by the allies
American troops enter Paris, joining the Allied fight to liberate the city from German control. After more than 4 years under Nazi´s occupation. This event of liberating Paris let Free French goverment and its president began to established a provisional French Republic. -
Suicide of Hitler
Adolf Hitler commits a suicide by eating a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. He killed himself with his wife. This event is so important because Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces, ending Hitler’s dreams of a “1,000-year” Reich. -
Dropping of first atom bomb on Hiroshima
This event was done by America. The president Truman wanted to end the war rapidly and to destroy Japan because on the contrary, they would have lost war and had a lot of casualties. This is so important because a lot of people die and caused a big impact. -
Japan surrenders
The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced by Japanese Emperor Hirohito on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945. This marked the end of World War II. Nuclear weapons led to this event.
