    NATO
    The NATO treaty was signed in 1949. It was created to mainly stop Soviet expansion and to creat stronger North American presence in Europe. The treaty said that an armed attack against any of the countries was and attack against them all so they had to help. The U.S A, Canada and many of the countries in Western Europe had signeed this treaty. In return the Soviets made the Warsaw pact. The significance of this event was that countries now had to help each otherunlike where before WW2 theydidn't

    Hungarian Revolution
    This event summed up the cold war. Communist rule and anyone who disagre died.Hungary wanted to push Russia out of their home. With the Soviet leader Stalin dead in 1963, they decided to stand up.A bad harvest, fuel shortage and cold and wet aiutmn in 1956, Hungary had enough. ON )ct,23, 1956 the streets of Budapest were filled civllians protesting peacefully. Russia left but returned when Hungary wanted to leave the Warsaw pact, The Soviets killed 30,000 people and 200,000 were forced to flee.

    Cancellation of the Avro Arrow and the Bomarc MIssile
    The avro arrow was a military defence jet that was made in Canada. It cost 12.5 miillion and a lot of countries werent interested. The project was cancelled and then 14,000 workers had no job. Then the Bomarc missile was introduced.It required nuclear warheads and Canada didn't wan to carry those.     The quiet revolution was a time of great change in the prvonce of Quebec. After the Liberals had kicked out the Union Nationale, the decided to make them the owners of their own home. They nationalized private electrical companies. This was important for Canada as the Quebec was starting to put the French back into power in Quebec and kicking out the english.("Quiet Revolution")
  • John F Kennedy Assasinated

    John F Kennedy Assasinated
    In the fall of 1963, John F Kennedy met an unfortunate fate, during his election campaign for 1964. He was assassinated just after noon while in Dallas,Texas. On this day while driving around the city Lee Harvey Oswald shot at Kennedy's car and the president was struck in the neck. His governor was shot in the chest, but fortunately the governor recovered. The assassinator was caught.These events were similar to the death of Abe Lincoln and that if the leaders of nation can be killed, so can we.

    Expo 67 was a world fair in Canada to salutte Canada as it was 100 years old. The country was visited by over 50 million people over the course of 7 months. The fair was very successful with all the pavilllions of different cultures. This really gave Canada a chance to show off ins many different cultures and its unity as a nation.(Whelan,John)

    Official Languages Act
    The Official Languages Act was a step forward for French and English equality. This act required every federal institution to have everything written in English and in French as they both are now the official languages of Canada. This created equal job oppurtunities for people who speak either language in federal institutions. This was important as French people were becoming more recognized as a part of Canada.

    1976 Montreal Olympics
    The Montreal Olympics were a big thing for Canada, it allowed us to show off as a country. There were new events opened to woman, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd came and delivered a speech and Hockey was played on a fake pitch for the first time. This was important for Canada as we could show our hopitality, wealt, power, culture and talent in athletics at this events.("Montreal 1976")

    Death of Elvis Presley
    The rock star Evlis Presley was found dead in his bathroom in a pool of his vomit in 1977. At the age of 42 the superstar died as a dug addict. He died of cardica arrythnia and with many painkillers, tranquilizers and 4 other drugs found in his system.     IBM makes the first PC
    The technology we have today is very advanced compared to the first ever IBM personal computer. Made in August,12,1981 progect Acorn was on shelves for $1,565, or $4000 today. It was the first computer using of the shelf parts and was sold by outside distributors. This was revolutionary as it pave the road for the technology we have today.(History of the IBM PC)
