Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet
Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet was introduced on the 22nd January 1970. The Boeing 747 was a commercial airliner often referred to by the name 'Jumbo Jet'. The Boeing 747 was the worlds most recognisable aircraft and held an amazing capacity record for approximately 37 years. -
Clarkson went into liquidation
Clarkson Travel Group was an pioneering package tour operator in the UK during the 60s and early 70s. The company was very successful but ended up having finacial difficulties. in 1972, Clarkson was taken over by a major air travel company called Court Line however on the 15th August 1974, Court line went into liquidation with a lot of money owning to holidaymakers. -
Concorde
On January 21st 1976, Concorde took its first commercial passenger flight from Heathrow Airport which was built by aircraft manufactures in Great Britain and France. Concorde was flown on chartered flights to destinations all over the world. The Concorde shrinked the world for its hundreds of passengers with a maximum speed of 2,179km per hour which was more than halving the time between London and Newyork -
The Falklands War
The Falklands War was an underclared war that was fought between Argentina and Great Britain on the 2nd April 1982. The war was over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic. On the 2nd April 1982, Argentina invaded the Falklands islands which was then followed by the invasion of South Georgia the next day. On the 5th april 1982, the British goverment held a naval task force before making an assault on the islands. 655 Argentine personnells and 255 British personells died. -
Launch of Ryanair
Ryanair is an Irish ultra low cost carrier aircraft founded in 1985 by Irish Buisnessmen which include Tony Ryan who was the founder of the aircraft leasing company Guinesss Peat Aviation. Ryanair began flying between Waterford and Gatwick Airport. -
Invention of the internet
Tim Bernes-Lee who was a British scientist, invented the internet web on the 12th March 1989 whilst working at CERN. Tim Bernes-Lee changed the world and gave the web to the world for free. He sparked a global wave of creativity, collaboration and innovation that was never seen before by the world. -
The Channel Tunnel opened
The Channel Tunnel opened for passenger service on the 6th May 1994. The Channel Tunnel was a successful project which was organised by the Eurotunnel as well as Anglo-French consortium who built the Channel Tunnel. -
EasyJet
Easyjet was established in March 1995 by Stelios. It’s first flight took off one month later. EasyJet was made for low cost flights in Europe and was traditionally used for charter flights. Upon the launch, EasyJet employed around 70 people. EasyJet operated the Boeing 737-200 aircraft which was capable to hold 130 passengers which were flown to two countries which were Glasgow and Edinburgh. -
The death of Princess Diana
Princess Diana was involved in a car crash in the Pont De L'Alma tunnel in Paris France on the 31st August 1997 and died from sustained injuries. Her death caused a lot of public grief in the UK and destinations worldwide. Her funeral was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people. -
9/11 Terrorist Attack
The 9/11 terrorist attack happened on the 11th September 2001 in Newyork City. The 9/11 were four coordinated suicide terrorists attacks by Islamic extremists. The attacks changed America in a lot of ways as there were 2,996 men, women and children killed and 19 hijackers committed suicide. There were six people in the World Trade Centre towers at the time of the collapse that survived and almost 10,000 were treated for serious injuries -
Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsnuami
The Indian Earthquake and Tsnuami happened on the 26th December 2004. It was identified as one of the most deadliest disasters in modern history. Nearly 230,000 people died and millions of people lost everything. The Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsnuami had a magnitude of 9.1 quake which reptured a 900 miles stretch of fault line where the indian and Australian tectonic plates meet. -
Mamma Mia
Mamma Mia was released on the 10th July 2008. It was a massively popular film which featured some amazing movie stars. The film effected the Travel and Tourism industry due to the film being based and filmed on the Greek Island of Skopelos. The Island recieved lots of tourists after the film had been released and the film helped the Greek Island recover from the Finacial Crisis. -
Icelandic Ash Cloud
The Icelandic Ash Cloud occured on the 14th April 2010. The Icelandic Ash Cloud was a volcano which sent lots of Volcanic ash over nine kilometers into the sky. The eruption of the disaster was small however the impact was massive. Europe experienced air travel chaos for almost one month. The Icelandic Ash Cloud caused the largest air traffic shut down since world war 2 and the closures caused millions of people to be stranded in Europe and across the world. -
The London Olympics
The London Olympics was an international multi-sport event that happened on the 27th July 2012 and ended on the 12th August 2012. There were 470,000 visitors from overseas to London in July, August and September of that year which were all there for the London Olympics. The London Olympics earned £709 million by visitors. There were over 10,000 athlets, 204 teams and 302 events. -
Brexit
Brexit happened on the 26th June 2018. Brexit nogotiations took place between the United Kingdom and the European Union over the withdrawal of the United kingdom from the European Union. Brexit was one of the biggest impacts on the tourism industry. Thousands of staff such as seasonal and permanent are hired from EU countries to work in the tourism sector. -
The Coronavirus Pandemic
The Coronavirus Pandemic is an ongoing global pandemic which started in Wuhan China in December 2019. The Coronavirus Pandemic arrived in the UK on the 29th January 2020. Since 2020, there has been 638 million total cases and 6.62 million deaths worldwide. Many travel restrictions were put in place which meant there was a huge impact on the travel and tourism industry. Over 700,000 people lost their jobs during these times and many holidays and flights were cancelled. -
