The Berlin Conference
In order to prevent conflicts between the powers, Bismark convened the 1855 Berlin Conference to regulate African colonisation and trade. It was followed by a period of increased colonial activity. By 1914, 90% of the African continent was under European control. -
The first telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean was laid
Cyrus West Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company were behind the construction of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The project began in 1854 and was completed in 1858. The cable functioned for only three weeks, but it was the first such project to yield practical results. -
On the Origin of Species
In 1859, Charles Darwin published on the "Origin of Species", a book that defends that animals evolve through natural selection in order to adapt to their enviroment, it can de also defined as the "survival of the fittest". -
The first car propulsed by an internal combustion engine
In 1866, Karl Benz, a German inventor and engenier invented and patented the first car in History propeled by an internal combustion engine, whish used oil derivates in order to move. By 1844 a new desig with 4 wheels emerged. -
The Capital
In 1867, akarl Marx, publidhed "The Capital", abook that speaks about capitalism and political economy. In its fist book, it talks about the means of production and how they are organised in a capitalistic sociey. -
Suez Canal opens for the first time
The Suez Canal, stretching 101 miles from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, was officially opened in a lavish ceremony on 17 November 1869. Its main function was to make a shorter trade route between Europe and Asia, as merchants had to to arround Aprica in order to each Asia. -
Alexander Graham Bell and the Telephone.
Altough the telephone was invented by Antonio Meucci in 1857, Alexander Graham Bell patents it it 1876. The main function of the invent was to tranmit acoustic signals throug electrical pulses. -
Thomas Edison and the light bulb
Edison and his team of researchers in Edison's laboratory in Menlo Park, N.J., tested more than 3,000 designs for bulbs between 1878 and 1880. In November 1879, Edison filed a patent for an electric lamp with a carbon filament. -
Transmission of wireless across the English Channel
On 27 March 1899, Marconi transmitted across the English Channel from Wimereux near Boulogne, France to South Foreland Lighthouse near Dover, England. Also in 1899, wireless telegraphy was adopted by the British Royal and Merchant Navies. -
The first powered airplane
The Wright Flyer was the first successful heavier-than-air powered aircraft. It was designed and built by the Wright brothers. They flew it four times on December 17, 1903, near Kill Devil Hills, about four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. -
The first people to stand iat the South Pole
The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911, five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition.
