Election of Abraham Lincoln
This was an election between four candidates. The top two candidates were Lincoln and Breckinridge. In the end, Lincoln won the elction with 180 electorial votes. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina threatened to secede if Abraham Lincoln wins the election. Unfortunately, Lincoln won the Election of 1860. Therefore, South Carolina seceded to avoid their beliefs and cultures changed. -
Jefferson Davis Becomes President Confederate States of America
Jefferson Davis was elected as President of the Confederate States of America. He originally wanted to be assigned a military command, but instead was elected to be president. He was sad and happy at this decision. -
Fort Sumter, South Carolina
Fort Sumter is attacked upon by the Confederacy. It gets heavily bombed by ships from the South, not allowing any ships to get through and resupply the fort. This was the first battle of the Civil War. -
Lincoln Issues Blockade Against South
Lincoln, following the part of the Anacanda Plan, ordered men to make a blockade in the South coastline. This was done to block importation and exportstion of supplies. After many months, the South would run out of supplies which would force them to surrender. -
Robert E. Lee Takes Control
Robert E. Lee is given command of the entire Confederate army. He was a brillant general from Virginia who didn't like slavery. However, when Virginia, his home state, sided with the Confederate States, he joined the Confederate army. -
Richmond Becomes Confederate Capital
Richmond, Virginia was chosen to become the Capital of the Confederate States. The distance between the two Capitals were about 500 miles. Because Richmond became the capital, the Union army made many plans to take over Richmond. -
Antietam
The bloodiest battle of the Civil War took place here. McClellan fought against General Lee, and McClellan won the batlle. Because McClellan did not chase after the Confederate armies after they fled, McClellan was fired. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This document made all the slaves in the nation free. Sadly, it didn't free those slaves way down deep in the South. The slaves that this docuement intended to free were too far deep in the South for troops to enforce the law. -
Gettysburg, PA
Lee tries to take the war to the North by invading but fails the attempt. He did this because Southern conditions were better than the Northern's condition. Pickett's charge occured here and Pickett's men died. -
Vicksburg, Mississippi
Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on the river. Ulysses S. Grant took down Vicksburg and gained complete control of the Mississippi River. Essentially, the North had taken all of the Mississippi River, fulfilling the plans of the Anaconda Plan, thus cutting the South in half. -
Gettyburg Address
Abraham Lincoln gave his speech freeing all slaves in the South. This was seen as a military tactic and it weakened the South. The Southern economy was weakened from the lack of slaves. -
Sherman's march to the sea
Sherman waged a total war against the Confederacy. He destroyed everything in his path, including farms, homes ,and buildings. He made the South rebuild many of their things, which weakened them. -
Uylsses S. Grant Takes Command Of Union Army
After George B. McClellan was fired because of his decision, Lincoln assigned Ulysses S. Grant to lead the whole Union army. Grant was a very aggressive commander which lead to many victories of many battles. He later defeated General Lee, making the Civil War end. -
Appomattox Courthouse
This is where Lee and Grant met in order for Lee to surrender to Grant. Grant accepted Lee's surrender peacefully. This was the major event that ended the Civil War. -
Assasination of Lincoln
Lincoln is killed by John Wilkes Booth in a theater. John Wilkes Booth jumps off the balcony, injuring himself. He manages to get away, but is caught and killed months later. Somehow, no one catches him as he limped across the stage after yelling in Latin: "Thus always to tyrants" and saying "I have done it, The South is avenged". -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment makes all blacks free from slavery. Slavery is abolished and blacks can do anything they want to. They can receive wages and own property. Former slaves can go anywhere they wish to. "Free at last, Free at last, Thank God Almighty, Free at last!" -African Americans' phrase -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was ratified. It gave citizenship to African Americans. It also gives them rights of all citizens, including being able to do what they wish. The vote is not given yet, but will be later on. -
15th Amendment
Gives all African Americans the right to vote. Also no one can be denied the right to vote in the United States, regardless of race, color, or ethnicy. This made blacks equal with the rights that the whites had.
