    The first meeting of the House of Burgesses took place. Virginia was the first colony to have an elected legislature.

    The first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth, MA. Governor William Bradford held the first Thanksgiving and invited Chief Massasoit, Squanto, and 90 Wampanoag people. The feast was a celebration of the first successful harvest.

    England captured the Dutch colony of New Netherland and the King of England gave it to his brother James, the Duke of York. James became the colony's proprieter and kept a large part of it and called it New York. He gave the rest of the colony to his friends John Berkeley and George Carteret.

    Roger Williams was banished out of Massachusetts by Puritan leaders. Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island because he wanted religious freedom. He also kept the government separate from the church.

    Harvard College was founded by the Massachusetts General Court. Older boys could study at Harvard in Massachusetts after going to school .

    Chief Metacomet attacked New England.
    Chief Metacomet and other Native Americans attacked the New England colonist and their allies. The conflict lasted through 1675 and 1678. This was the first Native American attack on New England. The war didn't end until the signing of the Treaty of Casco Bay in April 1678.

    In 1681 Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn. He was a Quaker and wanted to start a colony where all Christians could worship in their own way. He was able to start the colony because King Charles II owed Penn's family money. Instead of paying Penn, he gave Penn land in the Middle Colonies.

    The colony of Carolina split into two colonies called North Carolina and South Carolina in 1729. The colonies split when the proprietors sold their land to the crown.

    Georgia was founded when King George II started a colony to keep France and Spain away from South Carolina. He gave the land to James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe wanted it to be a place for poor people and debtors. It was named after King George II.
