Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 interrupted the Missouri Compromise. Lines decided whether or not if the state is free or not. Also called the "Mason-Dixon" line. This angered the south because they needed more states so Lincoln would not be reelected. -
Bleeding Kansas
Missouri crossed the Kansas border to get them to vote pro-slavery. John Brown, who was an abolionist, lead a violent attack on pro-slave supporters. -
Sumner & Brooks
Sumner insulted the southerners for bullying and fraud in the Kansas elections. The nephew of the southerner named Brooks beat Sumner with a cane until he was unconcious. Sumner didn't return for 3 years. The empty seat in the South in the senate caused problems. -
Elecion of 1860
Lincoln not on the ballot in the South. The South felt their needs are not being heard. Lincoln wins the election. The South then leaves the Union. This causes tension between the Northern states and the Southern states. -
Fort Sumner
Fort Sumter remained in the hands of the union. For the people of South Carolina seizing the brick fortress was necessary to show they were serious. The South fired the first shot on the fort. Fort Sumner surrenders to the South. This was the first battle of the Civil War.
