The Northern Territory Chief Minister instructs the recommencement of police investigations after hearing that a British expert believed from a study of Azaria’s jumpsuit that her throat had been slit. -
Chamberlains Trial
Mrs Chamberlain committed for trial for murder, and Mr Chamberlain for being an accessory. Both released on bail. -
Trial Begins
Trial of the Chamberlains in the Northern Territory Supreme Court at Darwin. -
Trial Verdict
Mrs Chamberlain found guilty by the jury and sentenced to life imprisonment. Mr Chamberlain also found guilty and given a suspended 18 month sentence. -

Lindy Chamberlain is released on bail to appeal to the Federal Court, two days after giving birth to a daughter. -

Third Inquest
Third inquest:
Coroner John Lowndes finds that ‘Azaria Chantel Loren Chamberlain died at Ayers Rock on 17 August 1980. As to the cause of her death and the manner in which she died the evidence adduced does not enable me to say. I therefore return an open finding and record the cause and manner of death as unknown.’ -
Fourth & Final Inquest
The fourth inquest came to the conclusion that ‘Azaria died at Uluru on 17th August 1980 as a result of being attacked and taken by a dingo’.
