Casa Di Bambini is opened in Italy
Maria Montessori opens a preschool in Rome, Italy after becoming the first female physician in Italy and working with poor and mentally challenged children. Her approach to caring for children became wildly recognized all over Europe and the United States. She focused on the children and how they interacted with each other, their environment, and their superiors. The Montessori Method is still used in schools to this day. -

Margaret McMillan opens the Deptford School in London which specialized in care and health for young children, which ultimately led to the term "Nursery School". -

Patty Smith finds the National Association for Nursery Education (NANE) which is then later renamed NAEYC in 1966. -
The Education for All Handicapped Children Bill is passed
The Education for All Handicapped Children bill gave children with special needs the opportunity to get an education being in the "least restrictive environment". This was a turning point for children with special needs in education. -

Americans with Disabilities Act is passed
The Americans with Disabilities Act is passed by Congress in 1990, requiring all programs and establishments to accommodate all persons with any type of disabilities to the best of their abilities. -
No Child Left Behind is passed
The Leave No Child Left Behind act is passed which holds federal programs to a higher standard to improve public schools performance. By doing this, schools are required to test the children with statewide testing and provide reports of progress. -
Common Core Stat Standards go into effect
Common Core State Standards for math and language arts are published. The standards are used as a basis for curriculum and outline what a student should be learning and know by the end of each grade.
