    Brown vs Board of Education
    Brown vs Board of Education was a case brought in front of the Supreme court in 1954 with the premise that even if schools are equal in quality, complying with racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. This would overrule the Plessy vs Ferguson case of 1896 and mark the beginning of integrating mixed racial groups in the United States public school system.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This act was created to help students, families and schools by providing federal funding for the United States educational system. The law helps to bridge the gap between student/families of low economic standing and emphasize equal access to education. Years later it would also help assist students who need special education services.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    Title IX followed up on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Although there was a law created, Title VI, to tackle civil rights issues in federally funded entities, the law did not include sexual orientation. Title IX was created to rectify and ensure that both employees and students of the school system were treated equally. The law continues to affect the school system today as gender identity becomes more relevant in modern society.

    Rehabilitation Act
    The purpose of the Rehabilitation Act was to expand special Federal responsibilities, research, and training programs to people with disabilities. For education, this meant that schools had to be accessible to everyone and students who have disabilities must have equal educational opportunities as those who do not have disabilities.This law helps students today ensure that they are welcome and valued in education and society.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    NCLB was created to ensure that all children, no matter their social status, will be able to receive the same level of education. This act was mainly directed to hold the states and school districts accountable for the level of education provided between each school. NCLB has exposed a problem of inequality of education throughout the United States that is still being tackled today.
