1) All matter is made of atoms; atoms are indivisible and indestructable.
2) All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties.
3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.
4) A chemical reaction is just a rearrangement of atoms. -

While investigating cathode rays, Thompson discovered that the rays were made up of negativly charged particles even smaller than the atom. He called them "corpuscles" and suggested that they make up atoms. He turned out to be correct because the rays are made up of ELECTRONS, which are very small, negatively charged particles that make up atoms.

Dmitri Mendeleev dies of the flu at 72 years old.

Rutherford drilled a hole into a lead box full of radioactive material that he shot a a piece of gold foil. He expected it to go strait through, but it went in every direction. After a while, he concluded that atoms were mostly empty space with a dense, positive nucleus at the center.
-
Using the elements' atonmic number, Mosely arranged them in order of atomic number.

Bohr's model shows an elements energy rings and electrons.
