While investigating cathode rays, Thompson discovered that the rays were made up of negativly charged particles even smaller than the atom. He called them "corpuscles" and suggested that they make up atoms. He turned out to be correct because the rays are made up of ELECTRONS, which are very small, negatively charged particles that make up atoms. -

Rutherford drilled a hole into a lead box full of radioactive material that he shot a a piece of gold foil. He expected it to go strait through, but it went in every direction. After a while, he concluded that atoms were mostly empty space with a dense, positive nucleus at the center. -
