Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln and John Bell. The southern states heavily opposed Lincoln in fear that he would take their right of slavery away. The north favored him for the same reason and his other political views. -
Southern Sucession Begins
Southern sucession began about a month after Lincoln was elected. It started with South Carolina and the other deep south states started to follow suit, naming themselves the Confederate States of America. -
Jefferson Davis Elected
Jefferson Davis, a senator from Mississippi, was elected by the new found Confederate States of America to be the new president. He was said to be a good leader and also searved in the military before his political career. -
Fort Sumter Taken
The battle of Fort Sumter started when Lincoln sent "Food for Hungry Men" to the soldiers at the fort. Fort Sumter was located in Virginia, therefore on confederate soil. This proposed a proplemfor Davis. He wanted to avoid war, but if he didn't do anything about the union soldiers on his teritory, he would look weak. Conflict broke out and thus began The Civil War. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh took place near the border of Tennessee near The Shiloh Church. The North and South clashed in what became the single bloodiest day in American history at its time. There were over 23,000 causalities. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
At this point in the war to solidify his view on slavery and try to convince some Confederate states to return to the Union, Lincoln issued The Emancipation Proclamation. This ordered the emancipation of all slaves in or part of any state that did not end their rebellion against the Union by January 1, 1861. -
Siege of Vicksburg Begins
The Seige of Vicksburg was a few month long seige of the Confederate army stationed in the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi, led be Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. It ended up being sucessful for the Union and played a huge part in crippling the South. -
Battle of Gettysburg Begins
The Battle of Gettysburg was a three day long battle in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania lasting from July 1, 1863 to July 3, 1863. It was ultimately a huge victory for the Union, and most consider it the turning point of the war. The casualties amassed to 51,000 on both sides and remains to this day to be the largest battle fought in North America. -
Election of 1864
The election was between Abraham Lincoln and George B McClellan. It appeared that McClellan would be victorious because most northern citizens were unhappy that the war was taking so long, but as soon as Lincoln got word form Sherman that Atlanta was captured, the race was over. Lincoln won by a staggering amount. -
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his approximate 28,000 troops to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant after the 9-month seige of Petersburg. This surrender sucessfully ended the Civil War. -
Andrew Johnson Takes Office
The day of Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson was appointed Lincoln's successor and took over the presidency. He was unseccessful in the position and was later impeached. -
Lincoln Assassinated
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in his presidential box at The Ford's Theater while watching "Our American Cousin. John Wilkes Booth, an actor and southern sympathizer, came in behind Lincoln and shot him in the head. Lincoln survived and was taken back to his house where he died later that night.
