Important Battles of The Revolutionary War

  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    This battle started the American Revolutionary War. The British troops marched from Boston to Concord to seize an arms cache. While Paul Revere and other riders began setting off all the alarms. The British retreated under intense fire then resulting in more battles to come.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    During the Revolutionary war on the Charlestown peninsula on the north side of the Boston Harbor. It was 2,400 British troops against 1,500 Americans. The Americans became short on ammunition, giving the British a huge advantage. This battle was the first action for the American Continental Army. Along with also showing how they needed to put more work into the army to make it more effective. This battle provided Americans with an important confidence boost.
  • Battle of Long Island

    Led by George Washington, this battle was part of a British campaign to seize control of New York. And to isolate New England from the rest of the colonies. Washington's defeat could have led to the surrender of his entire force. His ingenuity instead allowed him to escape and continue the fight. It ended up giving the British control of New York and became known as the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War.
  • Battle of Trenton and Princeton

    Was a surprise attack on Christmas night. The next day they attacked the Hessians, German mercenaries hired by the British. George Washington's army crossed the icy Delaware on Christmas day and over a course of the next 10 days. And then won 2 crucial battles of the American Revolution.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    This battle was known as the turning point in the American Revolution. Britain won first then the Americans came back and won the second battle. To celebrate the American victory, the continental congress issued a proclamation for a national day. ¨For solemn Thanksgiving and praise¨ was the first official holiday observance with that name. The British and Hessian troops surrendered their arms.
  • Battle of Vincennes

    Frontier battle fought in present day Vincennes. Indiana won and was led by commander George Rogers Clark. The colonists had to bluff their way to victory. The battle was over the capture of Fort Sackville.
  • Battle of Bonhomme Richard vs. Serapis

    Serapis surrenders to the Americans after saying they have not begun to fight. The Americans were commanded by John Paul Jones. After the Americans victory they transferred to Serapis from the Bonhomme Richard. Which ended up sinking the next day. Jones was soon known as a great hero in France for winning a hard fought engagement against the British ships of war. Serapis and countless of Scarborough, off eastern coast of England
  • Battle of Charleston

    Located in the city of Charleston, South Carolina in the United States. The British Army was conveyed by a fleet of ninety transports escorted by 14 Royal Navy Ships (five ships of the line and nine frigates). Americans suffered their worst defeat of the revolutionary. Britain got full recognition for winning after General Lincoln's surrender.
  • Battle of Guilford Courthouse

    The British suffered significant troop losses during the battle. There were around 1,900 British troops against 4,400 American troops. Both sides had muskets but the British carried bayonets as well. British soldiers were extremely hungry and tired after days of marching on short rations. The American fired first as soon as the British came into the clear. Britain scored another tactical win though they lost many troops during the process.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    The final battle of the American Revolution. British began peace negotiation shortly after the American victory. French soldiers landed in Rhode Island to help the Americans in September of 1781. Lord Cornwallis surrenders to the Continental Army and George Washington. As the French and American forces trapped the British at Yorktown.
