First Radio Broadcast in Australia
In November of 1923 occurred the first radio broadcast in Australia. It took place in Sydney, and begun the evolution of radio, a technology which would change Australian culture and unite us together as one. -
Sport Radio Broadcasting
In 1934, sporting commentators reported on a cricket match in England. Analasis of the game was sent via telex to the office in Sydney where preorted would read it out. A pencil scratching on wood was used for the crowd sounds. This was the start of the influence sport had on Australia, solidifying Australians love for sport and making it more common and popular to access sport, if one could not see a game live. -
First Independant Radio News Service
In 1947, the ABC created it's own independent news and current affairs station on the radio. This provided Australians with another means to access the news, not just through newspapers, and gave some independence to the people as there were now more options available, and less government control over the news they received. -
Invention of the Transistor radio
In 1954, the transistor radio began being sold, and quickly replced the old radio valve. The transistor radio was smaller and lighter, making radios even more transportable and accessible. They were also cheaper, allowing more people access to radios. -
First television station to air in Melbourne
On 4 November 1956, the first television station aired in Melbourne, called HSV-7. It aired 18 days before the Olympic Games, bringing the games into people's living rooms. -
Melbourne and Sydney television linked
In 1959, a microwave linked Melbourne and Sydney television together. This allowed television to be broadcasted live from both Melbourne and Sydney at the same time. This strengthened the connection between these two places, creating a stronger Australian culture as supposed to individual states. -
Television Colour
In 1975 was the introduction of colour on TV in Australia. this was a key event, creating a new generation of TV viewers, and popularizing cartoons and appealing to younger audiences. It also provided viewers with a more lifelike experience when watching television.
