European trade with Africa becomes well established
In 1850, Europeans began to trade a lot with Africa. They also sent major expeditions into the heart of Africa, such as the congo. -
East India company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins
In 1857, economic problems in India increased, and the sepoys, or Indian soldiers, began to become outraged. The soilders rebelled, and it spread. The East India Company couldn't keep control during the rebellion, and so, the British raj began, and the British set up many restrictions while ruling. -
Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas
In 1869, the Suez canal linked the two seas, therefore allowing the British to get to Asia and Africa faster. The opening of the canal was on November 17, 1869. -
Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization
King Leopold held the conference where 14 nations met to discuss and divide up Africa for colonization. -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
Queen Liliuokalani was the only queen of Hawaii and also the last monarch in Hawaii. She did not give in to foreign buisnesses and commercial things, so she lost her crown eventually. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
In 1896, Italians attempted to invade Ethiopia, but the Ethiopians fought back and defeated the invaders. -
Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
In 1898 the Spanish-American war broke out. After being defeated by the U.S. ,Spain turned over Puerto Rico ,Guam and The Phillippines to the US .They were Spain's last colonies and became U.S. territories. -
Boer War in South Africa
In 1899, the Boers, or Dutch farmers in South Africa, fought with the British, but they used Guerrilla tactics or, hiding amongst the people to try and fool them. -
Most of Africa is under European control
By 1914, most of Africa was under European control, and divided into sections.
