    The Monroe doctrine claimed that America would prevent European countries from interfering in affairs in the Western Hemisphere. In 1904, Roosevelt decided to invoke it to “liberate” foreign countries, like the Phillipines and Cuba. (1962 was Cuban Missile Crisis)

    The purchase of Alaska

    Platt Amendment

    In the treaty of Paris, Spain gave up their title to Cuba, and ceded Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, and Guam to America, for $20 Million.     VP Roosevelt Gives “Big Stick” Speech
    Vice President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech at the Minnesota state fair in which he said his famous line “Speak softly, and carry a big stick.” This paved the way for his “big stick diplomacy” when he became president two weeks later once McKinley was assassinated.   • Construction of the Panama Canal

    America saw a possible canal as a great way to assist cross continent trade. They decided to start a revolt, to allow America to step in due to the Monroe Doctrine. We built the canal and maintained control.
