    The Opium wars was 2 wars between the great Qing and the British government. It was because China's trade of opium. It started when british warships destroyed a chinese blockade of the pearl river. The war was caused though because the opium trades were affecting Britain's citizens.
  • Treaty of Nanjing

    The Treaty of Nanjing was an agreement which ended the First Opium War between the United Kingdom and China. It was signed on August 29, 1842 .Making China agree to creed Hong Kong Island to the British Empire.China was forced to open treaty ports for foreign trade. Also eliminating all tariffs on imported goods to create a “fair and reasonable” tariff. This was a repay to the British for the opium the government had destroyed.

The rebellion began under the ruling of Hong Xiuquan.Thinking he was the son of God, and was sent to reform China as the younger brother of Jesus.His idea to form a new religious group influenced by the Christian teaching caused the commoners of China to rebel.

Foreign imperialism in China, defeat in the Second Opium War, the Treaty of Tientsin and the Taiping Rebellion lead to the Self-Strengthening Movement. The advocates of Self-Strengthening were not republican revolutionaries or radical social reformers. They wanted to preserve Qing rule and maintain traditional Confucian values while embracing Western military and industrial practices.

The boxer rebellion decreased in followers, Combined their powers and sent 20,000 soldiers to resolve the problem. The boxer Rebellion ended in 1901
