In 1850, the Europeans make trade routes in Africa that will lead to wealth and exploration of the continent. Later in time, the Europeans would use their wealth to purchase weapons such as the Maxim Gun, for other places and conqour most of Africa in the Berlin Conference. -
Sepoy rebellion leads to the fall of the East India company
The sepoys were military officers that were Indian and fought for the British army in India. Their were many conflicts that sparked the rebellion but a more important one had to do with the Enfield Rifle. This rifle requiered fat to grease the gunpowder cartridge that had to be bitten off and most sepys feared that they would be eating a cow which was sacred in their religion. -
The Completion of the Suez Canal
In 1869, the Suez canal was completed by Muhammad Ali's grandson Isma'il. Isma'il used Freanch money to finace the project and this hand made canal was celebrated internationally. A debt from the canal caused the British to take over in Egypt in 1882. -
Berlin Cnference
From 1884 to 1885, the Europeans met together to discuss land distribution over themselves in Africa. The Scramble for Africa, as the conference was called, was mostly to the benefits of the Belgians but brought many goods to the other countries as well. -
Liliuokalani takes the throne in Hawaii
In 1893, Hawaii was looking to be taken over by the United States for their sugar trade system. However Liliuokalani made herself Queenof the islands and created a constitution that would give her more power. She was soon kicked from power and the islands were taken by the Us and Sanford B. Dole was elected president of the republic of Hawaii. -
Ethiopians defeat the Italians in the battle of Adowa
In 1896, King Menelik II led his nation of Ethiopia to defeat the Italians in the battle of Adowa. Ethiopia was one of the few nations that was not taken in the Scramble for africa however, after the scramble, many powerful nations surrounded Ethiopia. Menelik dealed with the situation by putting his enemies against eachother. -
Spanish American War breaks out
In 1898, the Spanish American war breaks out after spain sinks an American battleship in the port of Havana. This leads to war betweeen the United States and the Spanish. In the end, the United States defeat the Spanish and claim Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philipenes. -
Boer war in South Africa
In 1899, the Boer war broke out. The Boer war was fought between the British and the Boers over diamonds and gold found in the area. The Boers used guerilla tactics for a long time on the British, however, the British countered that by burning Boer farms and creating concentration camps for the women and children of the Boer lands. The British finally won the war in 1910. -
Most of Africa is under European control
By 1914, most of Africa is under European control. From events such as the scramble for Africa and many conquoring movements their was little African success in rebellion.
