China was trading with Britain and giving them tea but Britain could not provide anything to China so they secretly gave them opium which is a type of drug. This led to China being forced to sign an unequal treatment order and open the ports for trade.

    This was a peace treaty signed by Great Britain and China that ended the first opium war which also forced China into imperial international law.

    A French diplomat formed a campaign to build a new canal. The canal grew to become a major trade route between Europe and Asia. This allowed them to trade with each other without going all the way around Africa. This is connected to imperialism because the canal promoted the movement of troops and goods between Europe and its colonies in Asia which allowed Europe to easily maintain power and grow their empire.
