Libya Before Imperialism
Libya is broken up into three regions that were separated by deserts. Libya revolved around the regions, cities, tribes and major invasions of foreigners. There were constant struggles by others to control the land. The people were Muslim and spoke Arabic. The population was small. Libya was always ruled by anohter country. Th government always varied depending on who was in control. There were many active ports for trade too. Libya was poverty stricken. -
Italians Take Over Libya
In the 16th century the Ottamans took over Libya. The Ottoman's conrolled Libya until 1911 until the Italians conquered it. The Italians took control of Libya after the signing of the Treaty of Ouchy. Then Libya was turned into a colony. Libya was conquered for political and economic reasons. Libya was also a source of gold and a place that Italian citizens could go if they wanted to leave the country. -
Why Italy Took Over Libya
Italy took over Libya to have more land to control. To have more land made the ruler more powerful. Italy also took over Libya for economic power. The coast line was used to ship goods. -
How the Libyan People Were Treated and How People Reacted
The Libyan people were ruled by the Colonial Empire. Italy controlled the coast and a small inland piece of land. The Italians executed the resistance leader Omar Mukhtar in 1931. About twenty five percent of the population were killed during the resistance. -
Mussolini Takes Power
Mussolini started to build roads in Libya. He also started irrigation projects. -
Independence of Libya
The United Nations calls for the independence of Libya led by King Idris. -
Discovery of Oil
The discovery of oil brought great wealth to LIbya as it became one of the wealthiest nations in the world controlled by the rulers. It brought Libya from a very poor country to a very wealthy country. -
Overthrow of King Idris
The Revolutionary Command Council overthrew King Idris led by military leader Colonel Qadhafi. Colonel Qadhafi became head of Lybia's gevernment. -
United Nation Sanctions
U.N. imposed sanctions on Lybia for ariplane bombings in 1988 and 1989 killing 441 people. -
Violent Protests
Violent protests against Qadhafi's government. The U.N. issued an aresst for Qadhafi. Qadhafi fled and was captured and killed by protesters.
