Tokugawa shogunte has ruled the Japanese islands for two hundred years. They had driven out the foreigners, and Japan had no contact with the outside world. The western powers thought that it would be a good idea to expand global trade to the Japanese.

America Tries For Connection
American warship under Commodore Matthew Perry arrive at Edo Bay. They wanted to bring home the shipwrecked and captured American sailors. Perry brought a letter from President Fillmore saying that they wanted better treatment of the shipwrecked american soldiers, and requested to open ports for American trade. A few months later Perry returned with a bigger fleet of ships for an answer. It was his ships' guns that got the answer.

A Better Treaty
US consul, Townshend Harris, signed a more detailed treaty. It gave the US several more ports and exchange of ministers. Similar treaties were soon signed by Japan and many European nations.

Resistance To The New Order
The Sat-Cho alliance forced the shogun to end the relations with the West. The rebel groups soon showed that they were weak.

Rebels Try To Gain Back The Emperor
The Sat-Cho leaders demanded that the shogun restore the emperor. Their armies attacked the Shogun Palace and proclaimed that the emperor had been restored. A few weeks later the Shogunate system collapsed.

War With Russia
Japan launched a prise attack on the Russian naval base at Port Arthur, which Russia had taken from China. The Japanese forces moved into Manchuria and the Liaodong Peninsula. The Russian troops were no match for them. Then Russia sent its Baltic fleet to East Asia where it was defeated by the new Japanese navy.
