    A movement by Hong Xiuquan to create a kingdom where no one would live in poverty and there would be peace. He wanted to control all aspects for society in order to create utopia-like society in Guangdong. A lot of people died.

    Opium Wars

    A war between China and Britain because the British refused to stop dealing opium in China. Led to the first unequal treaty and the beginning of foreign influence in China.
  • Treaty of Nanjing

    Gave Britain money, had to "pay off debts," gave Britain Hong Kong, gave British merchants access to Chinese ports, British businessmen were free to do what they wanted. First of the "unequal treaties".
  • Matthew C. Perry Delivers Millard Fillmore's Letter

    It was a thinly veiled threat from the US "asking" Japan to open ports and allow free trade for the US. Caused the existence of the Treaty of Kanagawa.

    The Berlin Conference was a meeting during which 14 countries decided how to split up Africa. The Scramble for Africa was the period of time during which European powers were racing to lay their claim on Africa.

    Sino-Japanese War

    A war between China and Japan where Japan defeated China, driving them out of Korea and establishing themselves in Manchuria.
  • Open Door Policy

    US proposed the policy to allow other powers to enter China and trade. Created "spheres of influence" which were "footholds" that Western countries used to influence China's economy.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Workers started Boxer Rebellion because they were angry at the rights given to foreigners in China. They launched a siege on the European sector of Beijing. They hated Westerners and Christians. The Boxers were defeated by a multinational army. The downfall of the Boxer Rebellion made China realize they had to reform in order to survive.

    A war between Russia and Japan over Manchuria. They also drove Russia out of Korea. They were conflicts between the two superpowers in Asia and further demonstrated Japan's military power.
  • Japan Annexes Korea

    Japan took over Korea and brought it under their control. King of Korea gave up country because Japan had been taking it over for a while. Part of Japan's status at an extremely imperialistic nation.
