  • Rough Riders

    Rough Riders
    A group of American volunteers that formed to fight at San Juan Hill in Cuba. Many of them were cowboys, ex-convicts, and other rugged men. Colonel Leonard Wood led the group, but Theodore Roosevelt organized it. They were named "Wood's Weary Walkers" because by the time they got to Cuba to fight most of their horses were gone.

    One of the most important battles of the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt and Rough Riders defeated Spain. Placed America at an advantage. Two days later, American ships destroyed the Spanish fleet in Cuba. In August, the US and Spain agreed to a treaty ending the war.

    Spain was under control of many places such as Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Americans sought these lands and went into War with the Spanish. The Americans won the War due to their advanced military, and gained the land that the Spanish controlled.

    There was a 10 Years War in Cuba against the Spanish because they weren't treated fairly, raised taxes, banned reformist meetings. Next came the Cuban Revolution which gained independence for Cuba. Things became bad and they signed the Pact of Zanjon which ended the whole situation. To get away from Spanish control, they tried to burn stuff and make themselves unwanted. They also hoped the Americans would help them, which they did.     The Treaty of Paris gave the US the Philippines after the Spanish American War, but they purchased the Philippines for $20 Million. The Philippines wanted to be their own country, so we fought the Philippine-American War which was brutal. The Philippines won and now are their own independent country
