  • Queen Victoria becomes Queen

    Queen Victoria was 18 when crowned, she got the position becuase of the death of her uncle in 1837. Queen Victoria brought industrial expansion, economic progress, and empire to the throne with her.
  • Opium Wars

    (1839-42) China was independent from Europe but allowed trade at Guangzhou. Britain brought Opium from india which made many addicted to it. China went to war with Britain at sea but the British defeated China. With the Treaty of Nanking, Britian acquiers Hong Kong. In the second war (1856-60) the same thing happens with the same results.
  • Crimean War

    (October 1853-February 1856) The crimean war was faught between the Russians and the British, and the French and Ottomans. The war took place becausse of the conflicts of the powers in the middle Easy and was also caused because of Russian demands for protection of the Orthodox people. It ws fought on the Crimean Peninsula.
  • The Sepoy Rebellion

    India was ruled byt the British East India Trading Company - British used Sepoys ( army). The British changed their guns to Enfield Rifles whose cartridges were sealed with animal fat which was against the Sepoys' religion, so they rebelled. The rebellion led to nationalism, Indian National Congress, and home rule.
  • The Meiji Restoration

    Japan was a "locked country', they didnt let anyone in or anyone out. In 1853, Matthew Perry comes to Japan armed with a 36-Gun Steamship which leads to fighting in Japan. This ended up with Japan modernizing anf Japan is one of the most industtrialized nations in Asia.
  • Suez Canal

    The Suez Canal was began by French Ferdinand de Lesseps, and finsihed in 1869. The French owned the canal for 99 years. The canal is important becuase it cuts the time of the trip in half. Sometiems it is know as "The Highway to India".
  • Source of the Nile

    Dr. Livingston was sent by King Leopold II to scout the Nile river and look for the source of it. He was an explorer and missionary who dissapeared during his exploration.
  • The Berlin Conference

    Otto Von Bismark began the conference where he brought up the topic of the Scramble for Africa. The attendees were all of the major European powers exceot for Africa, at this meeting, they decided how they would divide up the African continent.
  • Congo Free State

    (1885-1908) King Leopold II of Belgium wanted the Congo for himself mainly for the rubber and ivory, so he spromised to end slavery and was granted the land by the Berlin Conference. He used soldiers armed with guns to take hosteges and beat them. He made it so that if you don't have a basket of ivory, you should give a basket of hands.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    USA declared an Open Door Policy because they were nervous that China would be colonized by Europe. Groups stood up to foreigners, the European section of Beijing was taken for hostage and held for months, foreigners invade and end the rebellion.
