In the 19th century, Even though India was a British colony, it was run mainly by the East India Company. The Sepoy were the soldiers in the East India Company's army. When the Sepoy found out the guns they used were being made with cow and pig fat. This angered the Sepoy and the rebelled. The British governement then took direct control over India, starting the Raj. -
Suez Canal links the Mediterranean to Red Sea
Isma'il attempted to modernize Egypt by building the Suez Canal. It was to connect the Red Sea to Mediterranean so that it was easier for ship to get to Egypt's ports. The Suez Canal was built by Egyptian Laborers and financed by the French. The Brittish eventually took over control of the Suez Canal. -

Queen Liliuokalani Takes the Throne of Hawaii
In 1893 Queen Liliuokalani became the become the last reigning monarch in the Hawaiin Islands. She tried to keep the island so that only its natives could live on it. She lost her power in 1898 when Hawaii was added to the United States. -
Ethiopians Defeat the Invading Italians in the Battle of Adwa
As one of the only two independent countries in Africa during the late 19th centruy, it was highly coveted by European Countries. In 1896 in the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia fended off the invading Italians, securing their independence. -
Spanish-American war breaks out; Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Philippines from Spain
In 1898, the Spanish-American war began between the USA and Spain. The war started when the U.S.S. exploded in Havanah Harbor.
The war lasted 10 weeks and the United States won by a large margin. -
Boer War
In 1899, the Boers, South African farmers took the great trek and headed north. On the way, they encountered the Zulus and headed back to fight against the British. They used guerilla warfare tactics, pretending to be farmers, but when the British came, they attacked them. The British then tried to put the farmers' wives and children in camps, forcing the Boers to surrender and the Brittish won the war -
Most of Africa is Under European Control
During 1914, most of Africa was being ruled by Europeans. The Europeans had superior weapons and technology which helped them conquer African countries. The only two countries to stay independent were Ethiopia and Liberia.
