  • Philippines

    After its defeat in the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded its longstanding colony of the Philippines to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. As a consequence, American authorities initiated a separation of the Catholic church from the state. English was introduced as the official language; the education system reformed; port, rail, and road-building programs initiated; and war-damaged settlements rebuilt.
  • Sudan

    In 1899, the British Empire, in a joint venture with Egypt, established the Anglo- Egyptian condominium of Sudan, formalizing their control of the country. Northern dominance and hegemony within the independent Sudanese government.
  • Kenya

    Kenya was colonized by Great Britain between 1901 and 1960. Unfair labor practices, structural racism, and forced resettlement based on the desires of the colonial settlers. As a result of the growing discontent, during the 1950s there was a sustained rebellion against colonial rule
  • Congo

    In 1908, international pressure forced the king to turn the Congo Free State over to the country of Belgium. About half the Congolese population died from punishment and malnutrition. Many more suffered from disease and torture. Among those who weren't killed, many were punished by having a hand and/or foot amputated and depletion of natural resources and the severe mistreatment of the residents.
