Suez Canal Built
Connecting the Mediterranean and the Red seas, a international team of engineers drew up a construction plan, and in 1856 the Suez Canal Company was formed. The canal was very small, 25 feet deep, 72 feet wide at the bottom, and 200 to 300 feet wide at the surface, it was very hard for large ships to navigate through, it was not used as much as it was hoped to be used. -
Division of Africa
A scramble to obtain Africa had begun, the French were expanding from the West African Coast towards Sudan in hopes of finding more diamonds and gold. The French were trying to cover as much land as quickly as they could in order to beat out other countries. -
Berlin Conference
Regulated European colonization and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period which helped keep the peace between counties while the division of Africa was occurring. This created laws to ensure that no country would get more land then what they could handle. -
Clash Over South Africa
The Africans, Dutch and British all wanted this land due to the location and resources it had to offer. Native tribes worked hard in order to keep the kingdom together yet they fell to Great Britain's invaders, Great Britain wins another section of land. -
Boxer Rebellion
Boxers, the rebels, performed physical exercises believed to make them able to withstand bullets, killed foreigners and Chinese Christians and destroyed foreign property. Boxers killed Chinese Christians and Christian missionaries and destroyed churches and railroad stations and other property. -
Boer War
After the discovery of diamonds and gold, a rush of Europeans from all over Europe raced to Africa in hopes of conquering the lands, the boer war began when the Boers, dutch farmers, tried to keep the outsiders out. The British ended up winning over South Africa where colonies were created to signal a change of life towards the Africans. -
Panama Canal Built
Originally built to shorted the trip around the entire continent of South America, a French company began engineering one of the most difficult projects to date, eventually having to pass over the reins to an American company due to financial and technological struggles. Panama has recently taken sole control over the canal which includes 3 levels of lakes in order to get the ships through the canal very easily.
