Opium Wars
The Chinese wanted to stop the importation of opium but Britain began to smuggle it in. When the Chinese found out they became angry and there was a war between China and Britain; the British won. -
Treaty of Nanjing
After the British won the Opium Wars, they created an unfair treaty with China. It gave Britain a lot of money and made China give up Hong Kong to the British. -
Sepoy Rebellion
Indian soldiers called sepoys rebelled against the British but the British put down the revolt in a year. As a result, Parliament tightened control of India and ended East India Co. -
Suez Canal
The ruler of Egypt at the time, Isma´il, agreed to the construction of the Suez Canal with Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French consul. The canal connected the Red Sea with the Mediterranean and made it easier to trade. The Suez Canal opened on this date. -
David Livingstone found
David Livingstone went to Africa to spread Christianity; he would always write letters back. After a year, he hadn't written so Henry Morton Stanley went to Africa to find Livingstone and found him. -
Berlin Conference
14 European countries gathered in Berlin in order to lay down the rules that any European country could claim land in Africa. In order to do so they had to notify the other nations of their claim. The Berlin Conference was created to have a more peaceful way to practice imperialism and began on November 15, 1884 -
Boer War
Boers were Dutch farmers who took Africans' land and created massive farms. They wanted to protect their resources from the British but failed and so they blamed the British and began to fight them. The Boers used guerilla tactics and the British captured Dutch families and put them in camps; the British won. It started on this date.
