This was a term that described foreign affairs involving China. This allowed anyone to trade in or with China. -

The Boxer Rebellion, was a violent anti- foreign, anti-colonial and an anti-Christian movement that took place in China. -
Revolution of 1911
This was the Chinese Revolution. China overthrew the last imperial dynasty and they established a Chinese Republic.
