Monroe Doctorine
The Monroe Doctrine is a policy issued by President James Monroe on December 2, 1823 saying that European powerhouses are not allowed to conquer newly independent Western Hemisphere countries anymore. The British navy helped support and enforce this policy, stopping European countries from conquering smaller countries in the Western Hemisphere. -
Treaty Of Kanagawa Signed
Matthew C. Perry sailed to Japan in 1853 to establish trade relations between the United States and Japan. The trade agreement to establish these relations was called the Treaty of Kanagawa. -
British Raj Founded
The British Raj was the form of government Britain instituted in 1858 after Parliament took control of India away from the East India Company after the Sepoy Rebellion. While the British Raj improved many aspects of India such as transportation and education, it also changed the ways of the people. Farmers were forced to grow cotton instead of wheat, leading to a food shortage in India. -
Suez Canal Built
The Egyptian ruler Isma'il wanted to continue modernizing Egypt by building the Suez Canal. The canal cut through the Isthmus of Suez and connected the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. However, the canal was built with private French interest groups, and Egypt could not pay any of the money back that it owed to these groups. -
David Livingstone Found
In 1869, Henry M. Stanley was sent into central Africa to find explorer David Livingstone, who had not contacted anyone in multiple years. Stanley searched for many years until he found Livingstone on Nov. 10, 1869, in the small town of Ujiji, on Lake Tanganyika. -
Indian National Congress Formed
The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885 to help gain more rights for the Indians. It led to nationalism rising up among the Indians. -
Panama Canal Built
President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to build a canal through Panama for trading purposes, so he needed to get Panama's permission. In order to do this, Roosevelt helped Panama gained its independence from Colombia. After Panama succeeded in gaining their independence, they allowed the U.S. to build the canal, which was finished and first used on August 15, 1914.
