1850 European trade with Africa becomes well established
Europeans began to industrialize, which means they needed natural resources. Not all countries contained these resources. Europeans saw the chance to control these raw materials for their industrial products. -
1857 East India Company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins
The East India company controlled India indirectly. After word that the bullets the Sepoy fought with was covered in pig and cow fat, the Sepoy's rebelled. As a result to this. England started the Raj, in which they directly controlled India. -
1884-85 Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization
The Berlin conference was created by the King of Belgium in order to gain the African raw materials. No Africans were invited to this conference. -
1893 Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
The Queen regretted her brothers loss of power to the American planters. When she became queen she called for a new constitution that would increase her power and restore political power to the Hawaiians. She was soon overthrown by American businessmen. -
1896 Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
Menelik II discovered that the wording was different in the Italian and Ethiopian treaties that he signed. He brought guns from the French and the Russians and sucessfully drove out the Italians. -
1898 Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, and the Philippines taken from Spain
As a result of winning the Spanish American War. The USA was rewarded with Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. -
1899 Boer War in South Africa
The Boers felt that it was the British's fault for the "outsiders". They started a war so they would not gain political power. The Boers used guerrilla tactics. As a result the English burned thier farms and put the women and children in concentration camps. -
1914 Most of Africa is under European control
After about 64 years, Africa is under almost complete European control. Africa's people and economy are still crippled from the scramble, but it also had some positive effects. -
1869 Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas
As an attemp to modernize Egypt, the French paid for the construction of the Suez Canal. Using Egyptian labor to build it. The Egyptians soon realized they could not pay for the construction. They handed it over to England, and the in 1882 the Brits occupied Egypt.
