    Loyalists
    Slavery was happening in the United States, so many black loyalists and slaves. came to Canada. They came because they didn't want to be a part of the revolution that was happening in America. This relates to my topic because this was how they ended up immigrating to Canada.
  • Settlement

    Settlement
    The loyalists who came to Canada settled around Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. They came to escape the American Revolution. The Butlers Rangers (a military group very loyal to Britain) helped them settle there. This is important because Canadians helped these Loyalist refugees immigrate to our land.

    In 1789 many French people immigrated to Canada to find more land and to escape the fighting in France. This is important because Quebec is discovered by French settlers.

  • Selkirk Settlers

    Selkirk Settlers
    A group of Scottish settlers that came to the Red River Valley in present day WInnipeg. Led by Lord Selkirk, a Hudson's Bay director, who purchased land for Scottish migration to Canada.

    Irish Immigrants
    Irish immigrants came to Canada to escape the famine that was happening in Ireland due to the potato crop failing. This is important because these Irish people immigrated to Canda to find better farming.

    Underground Railroad
    The underground railroad was built to help slaves come to Canada to escape slavery in USA. This is important because it helped the African Americans and allowed them to live freely in Canada.
  • Section 95 of the Constitution Act - The BNA Act

    Section 95 of the Constitution Act - The BNA Act
    It set out the division of powers between the federal government and the provinces on immigration policy. This is important because it determined how decisions were made on what immigrants were encouraged to and allowed to come to Canada and where they settled.
  • Survey of the Prairie Provinces

    Survey of the Prairie Provinces
    This was the survey of all the prairie provinces, began in 1870 and divided the prairies into square mile sections, those sections were subdivided in to four quarter sections. Those quarter sections were a 160 acres each and were the cornerstone of immigrants farmland. Immigrants were given a quarter section of land to farm. 10's of 1000's of people moved into the prairies under this system up to and after WW1.

    From around 1870-1914 many immigrated to Canada because the farm land was cheap and plentiful. This is important because this is why many people immigrated to Canada.

    A wave of settlers to Western Canada
    Lots of settlers were coming to Canada because of the posters that were around Europe. They advertized good crops, lots of land and a better place to live. This is important because many Europeans immigrated to Canada after that.

    Chinese people come to Canada to help build the British Columbia section of the railroad that goes from the East to the West of Canada. This is important because lots of Chinese immigrated to Canada.
  • Chinese Head Tax

    Chinese Head Tax
    The Chinese Head Tax is a tax the Canadian government put on Chinese immigrants by trying to decrease the amount of Chinese entering Canada. First it was $50, then $100 and then went all the way up to $500. This relates to my topic because this reduced much of the Chinese from immigrating to Canada.
  • Wave of Ukrainian Immigrants

    Wave of Ukrainian Immigrants
    Many Ukrainians immigrate to Candad to escape Communist rule, civil war and Soviet occupation. The hardships that they faced travelling to Canada was the very long trip there, the packed, dirty ship, and scarlett fever. This is important because people saw how great it was to live in Canada, so they risked theirs and their families lives.

    This immigration act allowed for the government to deal with undesirable immigrants. This relates to my topic because it reduced the number of immigrants to Canada.
  • Naturalization Act

    Naturalization Act
    This stipulated that immigrants from Non-British countries had to live in Canada for five years before gaining citizenship rights. This is important because immigrants weren't allowed to be citizens of Canada for five years after moving here.
