The McTigue family has been living in Ireland of hundreds of years, but now they have been thinking about moving to America. The Mctige's are farmers how live by eating and selling their crops. But now because of the Potato Famine they are at risk of starvation. -

The McTigue family has gotten on a boat with about 300 other Irish immigrants. Mike (the father) is caring for the two boys (Philip age 9 , and Liam, age 13.) While Deirdre is searching the ship for food and water. The long trip is horrifying for the boys. They watch the friends that they made on the boat get sick and pass away. After a trip that seemed would never end they arrived on Ellis Island. -

Almost a year has gone by and the McTigue family is still on Ellis Island. The huge amount of other immigrants from all over the world are also trying their luck in America. Over time many others die of and Philip has come down with a bit of a cold but is still about to move and be active. The sickness does not seem to be bothering him. But the Mike and Deirde still dicided to wait untill it blows over to try and pass into America. -

Philip is now heathly and the sickness did not affect them as the passed straight through Ellis Island without any hastle. Once they get through and are in the city Mike is almost instantly asked to work in the mines in the West. Mike accepts and he is told he will be put on the first train in the morning. Exept he is only aloud to take one family member. Mike takes Philip and gets Deidre and Liam a hotel to stay in until they can get on a train the Oregon. -

It is Philips birthday and the train is arriving in Oregon Territoy. Mike and Philip have not heard from Deirde and Liam since they left and Mike is getting worried. When Mike and Philip got of the train they were taken to a camp with many tents. The men tell them that this will be where they will stay untill they find land to build on and make a new life for themselves. A few days later they get a letter from Deirde and Liam saying that they are going to be getting on a train that night. -

Deirde and Liam have arrived in Oregon and have met with Mike and Philip. Mike and Philip have been working in the mines for a very long time and tell of a piece of land that they have found. They say that they were only waiting for them to get the Oregon. Mike and Philip say they have enough money from mining and Philip running races for money to support for a long time. Mike and Philip say that they were leaving in one week. -

It is Christmas and the Mctigue family has been living on a nice little cabin. Life in America is good and they plan on making this the new family land for many generations to come!
