Congress decalred a preference to immigrants from europe. It passed a law that defined who could become a citizen if they werent born in the U.S It was only possible for someone who was "free and white" -
Chinese Exclusion Act
an act passed by congress that said no chinese laborer could enter the U.S for 10 years. The act was renewed several times and was in force till WWII -
1880 and 1920
The heaviest period of immagration ever in the U.S took place from 1880 to 1920. 25 million immagrants arrived mostly from europe. -
Quota ACt of 1921
Congress sets up quotas favoring immagrants from northwestern Europe; -
Immigration ACt of 1924
introduced a quota system by country. Each countrys immmigrants were limited to 2% of foriegn born residents from that country they listed in the U.S census of 1890. -
Immigration reform Act of 1965
abolishing the quota system based on national origin. New law driven by the two priorities of uniting families and giving priority to certain skills. -
Immigration Reform and control act of 1986
Law passed by reagan which had the goal of slowing illegal immigration by punishing employers who knowingly hired illegal immigrants and he also wanted a way for long term, undocumented immigrants to become legal. -

law passed by congress that said no single country could acccount for more than 7% of the total number of immigrants. -
Immigration reform act of 1996
Another law passed by congress that increased border border patrol staff and stiffened penalties for creating false citizenship papers and smuggling undocumented workers. -

Bush committed himself to backing a bill to adress all immigration issues. Proposed to fill short term labor needs through a guest worker program and strenghten the border control.
