    Around the year 1000, vikings arrived. About 500 years later, European migration began. Native Americans and Europeans during this time and it was peaceful meeting. Other cultures did not get along which lead to violence and diseases.

    The Spanish Immigrants were found in St. Augustine.

    A Peace Commission is made by the British Parliament to negotiate with Americans. Independance is rejected by the Congress.

    The House of Burgesses grants freedom to the slaves in Virginia who served in the Continental Army.

    In 1790, the first Naturalization Act was passed. This Act says that "…any alien, being a free white person, may be admitted to become a citizen of the United States..."

    America was becoming, in Thomas Paine's words, "the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty from every part of Europe." There were 3.9 million people counted and English was the largest Ethnic group. 20% were African and there were also Germans, Irish, and Scottish. Native Americans were not counted.

    Immigration started to slow down during these years. On average there were only about 6000 a year. Hostilities between England and Napoleon's France disrupted Atlantic shipping lanes. 1812 was the year the United States and Britain Immigration slowed down even more.

    Immigration started to pick back up again. More and more immigrants came to the U.S from Great Britain, Ireland, and Western Europe. Most of them went straight to New York, Boston, Philidelphia, and Charleston, and many were very sick and dying from the journey to get there.

    The slave trade was coming to an end. Americas moved to the west of thr United States and found jobs on railroads and settled in towns on the way. More Immigrants from Asia and Europe came due to the California Gold Rush

    Chinese Immigrants began to come to the United States, going straight to San Francisco.

    When the Great Depression begun, it gave immigrants less of a reason to come to America. Many Immigrants returned to their homes. World War II accelerated in Europe. German and Italian refugees were resident aliens were detained during this time.
