    Born in Nove Mesto, Bohemia. His parents were Isadore Nagel and Frida Weiss Nagel. They arrived in America in 1911. Nagel became a citizen in 1919 . Studied in New York and received his Bachelors in social studies. Received his masters and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Columbia University in 1925 and 1931. He became a teacher, got married in 1935 to physicist Edith Haggstrom and taught at Rockefeller University. Retired in 1970 and continued to conduct seminars until his death in 1985.

    Major works

    Coauthored a textbook with Cohen known as "An Introduction to Logic and Scientific Method" (Cohen and Nagel 1934). "Principles of the Theory of Probability," which contributed to the International Encyclopedia of unified Science. "Sovereign Reason and Logic without Metaphysics" (Nagel 1954 and 1956). "The Structure of Science" (Nagel 1961)."Teleology Revisited" (Nagel 1979).
