Ian Hacking: A Mass contributor of Science
Ian Hacking was a typical Scientist that of course was interested in proving science wrong. This was something he started as soon as he was a professor in the 60's at the University of Virginia. The diversity of his philosophies were remarkable. Longva, Hjørdis Maria. “About Ian Hacking.” Holbergprisen, 8 Mar. 2015, www.holbergprisen.no/en/ian-hacking/about-ian-hacking.html. -
Realism of entities https://youtu.be/6mYfVgdtfUY
Ian Hacking came up the idea of "realism of entities". With this theory Hacking was saying to produce science you have to intervene in certain situations. Intervention is a certain precondition that needs to exist for science to exist. For example, to prove that something exists doesn't necessarily mean that you follow the theories that the certain thing exist because they all might be false. If you intervene in certain projects and can manipulate them in experiments then they exist. -
Probability
Ian Hacking's early research included the concept of probability and statistical inference. Probablity is the cornerstone of many different sciences including the elaborate and still yet not fully grasped quantum physics. Something more relatable will be the randomized trials and what probability means to someone other than a scientist or mathematician. The Emergence of Probability was one of his most famous book explains more in depth about the concept of probability. -
The Taming of Chance
One of Ian Hacking's most prized books was the The Taming of Chance. This was one of the hardest concepts for people to realize or take on board. The reason being because everyone thought it was vulgar and just wouldn't work. People that knew too little about science were the ones that didn't know the inner workings of chance.
