  • World War l: Injured Veterans and the disability rights movement

    The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) was founded in 1919 to raise awareness about disabled (both physically and mentally) veterans while trying to get the government to create programs for the rehabilitation of disabled veterans.
  • Helen Keller

    Helen Keller was born in 1880. When she was 19 months old she suffered from an illness that left her both blind and deaf. She learned how to communicate and in 1924 she joined the American Foundation for the Blind (ABF). She gave many speeches and raised awareness for the disabled community. She passed away in 1968.
  • 25-day sit-in

    In April of 1977 almost 120 diabled people held a 25 day sit-in in a federal building. They stayed until an act was signed to give people with disabilities equal rights. During the sit-in members of The Black Panthers provided meals to the protesters.
