Fourteenth Amendment
Fourteenth Amendment was created due to literature in 1857 forbidding black citizenship. The Fourteenth Amendment eliminated the three-fifths of a free white person vote. The Fourteenth Amendment stated " All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside." -
Fifteenth Amendment
The Fifteenth Amendment was created in relationship to the Fourteenth Amendment of citizenship rights, it needed to clarify that blacks were able to vote. Thus the Fifteenth Amendment was created. -
Smoked Yankees
During the Spanish-American War. African Americans were torn between either fighting right beside Whites that did not see them as equal others felt it was a opportunity to prove themselves. -
African Americans in WWI
Though African American fought in WWI they were segregated and often suffered from racism. African Americans however did start to hold rank and prove themselves on the battle field. Colonel Charles Young held the highest rank. -
Increased Economic Opportunities
During WWI many men were recruited to fight overseas for their country, this left many positions vacant. African American just like women were able to take advantage of this and were able to find jobs in steel, mine, and automotive industries. -
The Harlem Renaissance
The 1920's brought on new forms of expression for the African American community. This is especially true in the subdivision of Harlem in New York City. African Americans started to embrace their culture through art and music.
