    An important alliance between Francis I (the king of France from 1515 to 1547) and Suleiman the Magnificent (Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566) (Ágoston 2009)
  • Trading in West Africa

    The King of France gave a company in France use of a ship so that they may trade in Senegal, a country on the west coast ("French West Africa" 2017)
  • Trading Post Established

    The French created a city in Senegal called St. Louis. That city became the official trading post for the French ("French West Africa" 2017)
  • Beginning of Napoleonic Campaign

    Napoleon Bonaparte set out to conquer Egypt July 1, 1798. He captured Alexandria before making his way to the capital ("Campaigns and Battles").
  • The Battle of the Pyramids

    While Napoleon lead his soldiers to Cairo he encountered a military group called Mamelukes. The battle only lasted 60 minutes with Napoleon forces walking towards Cairo victorious (Dellinger 2016).
  • Bonaparte stranded in Egypt.

    Admiral Nelson of the British military caught the ships that the French brought with them and blew them up. Napoleon and what was left of his military were stranded in Egypt. He used this as a opportunity to have a western influence on ("Campaigns and Battles").

    French Rule of Algeria

    Algeria was an independent country for a short time right after the ottoman empire fell. The same muslim empire that had an alliance with the french. In 1830 they started their conquest to have power over Algeria. This lasted until the war of independence that lasted from 1954 to 1962 (Clancy-Smith 2017).

    The French start to move more into West Africa to gain new land (FrenchWestAfrica_StudentWorksheets).

    French Rule of Tunisia.

    France gained control of Tunisia when the Monarch of the country had no choice but to sign the Treaty of Bardo. The treaty gave French the ability to rule over the land and also protect them. This lasted until they gained independence in 1956 ("French Tunisia").

    French Rule of Morocco

    France held power over Morocco after the signing of the Treaty of Fez took place. After years of revolting, planning, negotiating, and fighting for freedom Morocco gained its independence in 1956 ("French Morocco").
  • Army of Africa in WW1

    Almost 180,000 men from Africa were recruited to help the French fight in World War One. The tactics that the French used to get these men to fight involved bribing, destroying crops, and kidnapping family members (Njung 2014).
  • Army of Africa in WW2

    During the second World War many people from Africa fought on the French side. The recruiting policies involved describing situations where Germany would win the war. This tactic was used in order to convince the Africans to fight with the french (BBC World Service).
