In 1770 James Cook in the HM Bark Endeavour charts eastern coast and claims it as British. -
FIRST FLEET
From 18th to 20th January The ships of the first fleet reach Botany Bay to begin a colony. -
FIRST FLEET - AUSTRALIA DAY
The First Fleet relocate to Sydney Cove. This day later is celebrated as Australia Day. -
CHANGE OF NAME
Permission was granted to change the name of continent from "New Holland" to "Austrlalia". -
BRITISH TERRITORY
The whole of Australia is claimed as British territory. -
NEWLAND ZEALAND SEPARATED
1841 New Zealand becomes a separate colony. -
COLONIES OF AUSTRALIA
In 1860 there were six British colonies in Australia being Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Laws of the colonies were made by the British Parliament. -
Henry Parkes
The Premier of New South Wales, Henry Parkes, convinced the other premiers to discuss federation of Australia. -
Constitution
Work began on an Australian constitution. A draft was drawn up by Edmund Barton (NSW), Andrew Inglis Clark (TAS), Samual Griffith (QLD), and Charles Kingston (SA). -
AUSTRALIANS VOTE
All Australian to have a chance to agree with constitution by vote. -
Constitution to British Parliament
9th July 1900 The constitution was taken to British Parliament and was signed by Queen Victoria and become law we would become the "Commonwealth of Australia". -
Commonwealth of Australia
1st Jauuary 1901 Australia became the Commonwealth of Australia.
