In the 1700s, there were multiple types of dwellings. They ranged in design and construction from sod houses, to log cabins and ranch houses. At this time many people were agrarian, meaning, people who earned their living from the land. -

This is a 1700s sod house. It was made from a special plow that could cut the dense virgin sod, then it was cut into bricks and stacked. -
1700s
This is a 1700 log house. They had to find trees with straight trunks that would make good logs for building. Once they cut the logs to the right length, they would cut notches at each end where the logs would fit together at the corners of the building. Once the walls and the roof were finished, the pioneers would seal the cracks between the logs with mud or clay. -

During the 1800s, houses such as row houses and tenement houses were made. This was around a time of immigration when there was a lot more housing needed. -
1800s
This is an 1800s row house. Row houses are groups of dwellings linked by common sidewalls. Many of them were built to house factory workers. Sometimes the 2-story houses housed as many as 6 families at one time. -
1800s
This is a tenement house, these were a huge part of the immigrants at this time. They were built to house all of the immigrants coming into America. They were typically 5-stories and had 116 two-room apartments. They used outdoor toilets which were located on land in between buildings. -

1900s
There was a housing boom in the 1900s to meet the need for housing. In response to the shortages, factory-produced units emerged as a major type of American housing. There were houses like tract houses. -

This is a tract house example, tract houses are groups of similarly designed houses built on the same tract of land. -

This is an example of what I think was a factory-produced house. They built this to help with the housing shortages. This was affordable enough for them to do. -
