Housing Overview
When the Second World War came to an end the Australian dream came to rise, this was the dream of building your own house on your own block of land. this rise came about from the soliders returning home and the increase of immigration levels. -
1950's homes
In the 50's houses were built with 2-3 bedrooms, kitchen, small living area and 1 bathroom and laundry usually out the back of the house. they were made from such materials as concrete and fibro -
Brick Veneer Houses
These houses were made from bricks and red roof tiles, this led to the development of brick veneer houses, where a single layer of brick is attached to an internal timber frame.this looked like a double brick house from the outside but was much cheaper to construct and provided better insulation. Brick veneer houses are still common in Austraila. -
Immigration rise
As there was a shortage of skilled workers to help with the reconstruction efforts of houses the government introduced a migration programme to increase the countries population. -
Housing expansion in the 1960's
As cars were becoming more affordable, people were able to live further away from the city, garages were also being built onto houses. building materials became cheaper and so bigger houses and house extentions such as a second bathrooms and rumpus rooms were added. -
Environment housing
Australians became more aware of the environment, people started moving to the bush and used raw materials such as mud brick and raw timber. Solar energy was introduced for heat and energy purposes. -
Houses in the 1980's
In the 80's houses became bigger and two story buildings were becoming more popular -
Urban sprawl
the increased desire to live in the inner city resulted in an urban sprawl, restaurants and cafes helped influence this. Roads and transport became worse as a result of this and so there would have to be an improvement. -
Continued urban sprawl
In the 90's the issue of urban sprawl was still present as people still had "The Australian Dream" and so improvements were needed. These improvements included improved public transport and housing developement in areas that made better use of the land. -
Bigger houses
In the 90's houses were becoming bigger than ever even though the population was rising at an all time low, front and back yards were becoming smaller and smaller and the houses were dominating the land. -
Helping the environment
Insulation and new building materials were being used as a push for a more ecological way of building houses came to rise. these building materials were designed to use less energy and improve our carbon footprint. -
2000's Housing
In the 2000's houses have become more unique in terms of design and have features added such as glass balconies and curves.
