    Horace Mann was born on May 4,1796 in Franklin Massachusetts.
  • Mann becomes Massachusetts Senate President

    When Mann was in Senate, Massachusetts' education system was deteriorating dating back to the 1600s. Shortly after, a reform movement started when Massachusetts created the nations first board of education.
  • Mann is elected secretary of the newly founded Board of Education of Massachusetts

  • Mann founded the Common School Journal which called out public schools about their problems and included his 6 main principles

  • Went to Europe to visit schools, especially in Prussia to examine their educational systems to see how they compare or contrast to the ones in the U.S.

  • Mann is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives

    He would promote an agenda of public education and normal schools to train teachers
  • Supported the decision to adopt the Prussian education system to Massachusetts

    Later, the Governor of New York set up the same system in 12 New York schools on a trial basis.

    Horace Mann died on August 2, 1859 in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
