13th Amendment
Amendment that abolished slavery and freed all of the slaves. -
14th Amendment
Made all former slaves official citizens who had equal protection of the law as their white counterparts. -
Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
Congress passed many reconstruction bills but was vetoed by Johnson. But Congress was able to get around vetoes when they had enough votes to overturn. Congress then impeached Johnson. Congress was one vote short of removing him from the presidency. -
15th Amendment
Gave all men, regardless of color or former servitude, the right to vote. -
Compromise of 1877
A deal that ended the dispute over the 1876 presidential election. Let republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes become president.
