    City council members are exploring the idea of building micro-cottages in San Jose to house the homeless. These 150 square foot cottages cost around $5,000 to construct and would be placed on under-used public land or in warehouses. This housing option would offer transitional housing to homeless people. The feasibility, in both fiscal and regulatory matters, is being reviewed.

    "The Jungle" was a 68-acre homeless community that was home to more than 300 people, considered the largest in the nation. After previous failed attempts to bulldoze the lot, on December 4th, 2014 the city shut down and started to clean out the camp. To solve the problem further, the city planned to find permanent housing for two-thirds of the camp's residents and subsidize their rent for a year or two.

    San Jose Goes Forward with Plan for New Homeless Housing
    San Jose city council is moving forward with a new housing idea that would place those in need in a downtown high rise. Villas on the Park will be a shelter with 78 studio apartments, a two-bedroom manager’s apartment and 10 beds for interim emergency housing.
    Located next to St. James Park downtown, the complex will sit in the highest concentrated area of homeless in the city.
