Canon laws were laws that the Church made up and if broken, you were to be excommunicated from the Church and city. Courts were also made to determine if someone did truly break the laws or not. -

German emperor, was mad that the pope banned lay investiture. Henry ordered the pope to step down, then the pope excommunicated Henry. -

Concordat of Worms
Henry and the pope, Gregory's, ancestors kept fighting over lay investiture. They reached a compromise and decided that the Church could appoint a bishop, but emperor could veto that appointment. The compromise was called the Consordant of Worms. -

The Italian soilders faced Frederick's army, at the Battle of Legnano. The Italians won which surprised everyone including Frederick. After he lost he didn't know what to do, so he made peace with the pope and Church. -

At this time Frederick made peace with pope and came back to Germany. Though since he lost to Italy's people not everyone respected him as they used too. Which made him not as popular emperor as he wanted to be, and not as popular as the past emperors. -
Charlemagne Crowned Emperor
Charlemagne was the first emperor ever crowned by a pope. The pope who crowned him was Leo the third. He was a ruler who was connected to the church. Since he accepted the Church, the people accepted him. -
Otto Crowned King
He followed the policies of his role model Charlemagne. Which ment that Otto formed a close relationship with the Church, and also with the people. -
Excomminicaton
If you are excommunicated you are thrown of of the Church and city. Which means if you break the laws, or argue with the pope you will be banished. -
Otto the King
Also known as Otto the Great. Gained support of the people in the Church, ivanded Italy on pope's behalf. Was also crowned emperor by pope.
