  • National Hockey League (NHL) was founded

    On November 26, 1917, the National Hockey League was founded by four Canadian teams; Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Toronto Arenas, and Ottawa Senators. Now, the best team from the NHL would compete against the best team from the PCHA for the Stanley Cup.
  • Most goals scored in an NHL game

    Most goals scored in an NHL game
    On January 10, 1920, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto St. Patricks combined to set an NHL record for most goals scored in one game. 21 goals were scored in this game, in a 14-7 win for the Canadiens. This record has since been tied by the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks in 1985, but has never been passed.

    Joe Malone scores 7 goals in 1 game
    On January 31, 1920, Joe Malone, nicknamed “The Phantom”, scored 7 goals in a 10-6 win over the Toronto St. Patricks. That night was one of the coldest nights throughout that whole winter, and only 1,200 fans attended the game. This record has not been broken to this day, and probably never will.

    On April 1, 1920, the Ottawa Senators won the Stanley Cup, beating the Seattle Metropolitans, 3 games to 2. Ottawa dominated that season going 19-5 that season, which led to them winning the cup. Jack Darragh, lifted Ottawa to the win as he scored a hat-trick in this nail-biting game.
  • Winnipeg Falcons win Olympic hockey championships

    Winnipeg Falcons win Olympic hockey championships
    On April 26, 1920, the Winnipeg Falcons hockey team won the first-ever Olympic hockey tournament hosted in Belgium. Winnipeg represented Canada and played against 6 other countries; those being Sweden, Belgium, United States, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, and France. The United States won silver and Czechoslovakia got bronze.
  • Toronto Granite win Olympic Gold Medal

    On February 8, 1924, the Toronto Granite Club won the Olympic gold medal in ice hockey, hosted in Chamonix, France. The team met with the United States in the gold medal game, dominating them by a score of 6-1. This was the second gold medal in ice hockey awarded to Canada.
  • Victoria Cougars wins Stanley Cup

    On March 30, 1925, the champions of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), Victoria Cougars, were the very last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup, beating the Montreal Canadiens, 3 games to 1. They would also remain the last team from British Columbia to win the Stanley Cup.
  • Toronto St. Patricks are renamed to the Maple Leafs

    On February 14, 1927, the hockey team Toronto St. Patricks were renamed the Toronto Maple Leafs. This decision was made as the city of Toronto was no longer predominantly Irish. 80% of the city’s population was now English. It didn't make sense to have a name that only appealed to one group, so they changed from St. Pats to Maple Leafs.
