    The origins of Hockey
    The idea of hockey came from early people in around the 1700s-1800s. Native Americans played it in a similar way.
  • James Creighton

    James Creighton
    James Creighton was the person who started the sport of hockey and had the idea of the sport. In 1872 James moved from Nova Scotia to Montreal Canada and bringing skates a hockey stick and a game with a set of rules with him along the way. That is where it started.
  • Rules are made

    Rules are made
    In 1875, J.G.A. Creighton established the first rules of hockey and they were sent to the public in the rule book in 1877.
  • The first game indoors

    The first game indoors
    At first, hockey was played outside on water formations like pond and lakes. The first indoor game was played on March 3 1875 with 40 spectators at Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal.

    The first refrigerated rink built was in 1876, in Chelsea London. The rink was named Glaciarium.

    In 1886, the first real league was established named The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. It had four teams, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Arenas.

    a challenge cup, held from year to year by the leading hockey club in Canada
  • The Pacific Hockey Association

    The Pacific Hockey Association
    A group of teams in Western Canada form the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. This league introduces several innovations: Blue lines are added to divide the ice into three zones, goaltenders are allowed to fall on the ice to make saves, forward passing is allowed in the neutral zone, and the 60 minute game is divided into three 20 minute periods.
  • The National Hockey League is formed

    The National Hockey League is formed
    The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed on a November 22nd, 1917 but, it wasn't until four days later, on November 26th, that five clubs officially joined the league. The Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs, the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, and the Toronto Arenas made up the league at that time.

    The first game that was played in the US was played in 1924. The two teams playing were the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadians, Boston ended up winning 1-2.

    Hockey became a sport in 1920 but was not actually played Intel 1924. It was not played because the Winter Olympics were nonexistent.

    Hockey is played all around North America and Europe. The NHL has 32 Teams. Skills and training have got much better.
