While recovering from a stroke and heart attack Fleming resided at the Claremont Rehab and Living Center for 5 years where he died. Six months afer death,
scans showed he had CTE. He was the first hockey player known to have been tested for the disease. He played for the Montreal Canadaiens, Chicago Black Hawks,
New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Buffalo Sabres. (aged 73) -

Rick Martin died from heart attack while driving. Later on, research found he had stage 2 CTE, a 'disease normally associated with enforcers. Martin is the first non-enforcer to
have been diagosed with the disease, which can really only be diagnosed posthumously. Played for Buffalo Sabres and LA Kings. (aged 59) -

NHL makes helmets mandatory
For all new players joining after that date. Veteran players were 'grandfathered in' and were allowed the option of wearing one. -

Death by lethal dose of oxycodones and alcohol. Huge enforcer, looked up to by many fans. Played for Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers. Scans of his brain after his death showed he had CTEs from all his concussions. -

Death by suicide. Played for the Vancouver Canucks, and signed to the Winnipeg Jets but died before he played for them. -
Craig MacTavish Retires
Last veteran in the league since the mandation of helmets. From this point on, everyone in the NHL wore helmets.

Players’ AssociationLen and Joanne sue the NHLPA; 'His parents say the union, after initial discussions with them after Boogaard’s death, did not meet a deadline to file a grievance seeking the final three years of his Rangers salary.' The NHLPA also was not really protecting the players the way they should be. They know about the drug problems and concussion but they don't act on it to try to fix it, hopefully they will soon
